Complexity is an important theme in interactive digital narratives (IDN). It is often incorporated to encourage interactive autonomy by allowing audiences to take on different perspectives. However, incorporating complexity into IDN requires new approaches to design, evaluation to verify effectiveness and professional training of creators.

In this article, we present a secondary analysis of IDN design and reflection sequences to investigate novice designers’ uptake of complex narrative elements and devices, such as character and choice poetics, to develop multiple story trajectories for player engagement. Our findings suggest that integrating these complex narrative qualities and tools is an important step towards a more effective IDN pedagogy. This is especially true in the context of the emergence of IDN as an alternative to traditional narrating.
