Official betting is an activity that allows a participant to place bets on sports events. A person participating in this activity can either place a bet at a physical sportsbook or use an online/mobile betting platform to place bets. A sportsbook can be found in professional sports venues, casinos, racinos (combination race track and casino) or other licensed establishments.

In the United States, legal sports betting began to expand after a 2018 Supreme Court ruling overturned a federal ban on sports gambling. As the industry grows, the NCAA continues to advocate for updated state laws and regulations that protect student-athletes from exploitation and harm, address the negative impacts of problem gambling, and maintain the integrity of college athletics.

The NBA will continue to work with DraftKings and FanDuel to promote responsible gambling through social media messaging, public advocacy, best-in-class practices for betting-related advertising on the platforms, and the application of strict standards and limitations on sponsorships and other promotional activities for NBA betting. The NBA and its partner companies also will collaborate on best-in-class player prop bets and other content to protect the integrity of the league’s games.

Colorado legalized sports betting in 2019. It launched with retail and online options in March 2020. BetRivers, PointsBet, DraftKings and FanDuel all offer Colorado sports betting.
