The ruling by the Supreme Court in 2018 opened the door to legalized sports betting in most states. That’s led to major changes in the way the NBA and other leagues associate with sports gambling.

The NBA is collaborating with DraftKings and FanDuel to promote responsible gambling and educate fans on betting-related topics, including the risks involved. The NBA will also support these partners in implementing best-in-class practices to protect the integrity of NBA games.

In addition, the NBA will continue to work with its partners on public education via social media messaging and other platforms, and will continue to engage with state officials in support of a responsible gaming framework. In this regard, the NBA will be engaged in a dialogue with the Maryland Gaming Commission to discuss its recommendations and ensure responsible gambling is promoted across all platforms.

New Jersey became the first state to launch legalized sports betting in 2021, and it has continued to dominate with over a third of the nation’s total handle. Other big states like New Mexico and Massachusetts are making significant strides in their growth as well.

In a bid to expand its footprint, the NBA has partnered with several of the major online sportsbooks to create NBA-branded products and services. This will help to broaden the reach of the NBA’s betting content and enhance consumer choice and accessibility. The NBA will also continue to partner with its existing in-person sportsbook partners, such as FanDuel and DraftKings.
